Life can move fast. Sometimes it feels like one moment is already chasing the next one before we have had time to breathe. We wake up, check the phone, think about what needs to be done, remember what did not get done yesterday, and before we know it, the day is already running us.
That is why the Sacred Pause matters.
A Sacred Pause is a simple moment of stopping. It may only last a few seconds. It may be one deep breath before we answer a question. It may be a quiet moment before we walk into a meeting, begin a conversation, send a text, or react to something that has stirred us up.
The Sacred Pause is not about doing nothing. It is about returning to Presence.
In that pause, we remember that we are more than our first reaction. We are more than our fear, frustration, worry, or hurry. We are spiritual beings living in a human experience, and there is a deeper Wisdom within us that can guide us when we give it room.
Ernest Holmes wrote, “There is a Power for Good in the universe greater than you are and you can use it.” The Sacred Pause helps us remember that this Power is not far away. It is not waiting for us somewhere else. It is present right here, in the middle of ordinary life.
We can practice the Sacred Pause while standing in line at the grocery store. We can practice it when traffic slows down. We can practice it when someone says something that hurts. Instead of reacting from old habits, we pause, breathe, and ask, “What is mine to know right now?” or “How would Love respond through me?”
This does not mean we deny our feelings. It does not mean we pretend everything is fine. The Sacred Pause allows us to notice what is present without letting it take over. We can feel anger without becoming anger. We can feel fear without letting fear drive the car. We can feel sadness and still know that Spirit is with us.
Rumi said, “The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.” The pause quiets the noise long enough for us to hear the still, small voice within.
Presence is not something we have to earn. It is something we return to. It is the holy ground beneath our busy thoughts. It is the calm center inside the storm. It is the place where we remember, even for a moment, that God is here, Life is here, Love is here, and we are not separate from it.
Today, I invite you to practice one Sacred Pause. Before you respond, pause. Before you rush, pause. Before you judge yourself or someone else, pause. Take one breath. Let your shoulders soften. Let your heart open.
In that small space, something sacred can happen.
We rediscover Presence.
We remember who we are.
We let Spirit lead.
